Creating Startup Success
In presentation by Steve Blank & Alexander Osterwalder, you can read, what enterpreuner having experience, research & plan for his start-up must undertake to become succesful.
1.) No business plan survives the first customer contact
2.) It's the business model, stupid.
"A business model describes the rationale of how an organization creates, delivers & captures value."
9 Building Blocks of a Business Model
- Cusomer segments (which customers & users are you serving?)
- Value propositions (what are you offering them? what is that getting done for them? do they care?)
- Channels (how does each customer segment want to be reached? through which interaction points?)
- Customer relationships (what relationships are you establishing with each segment? personal? automative? acquisive? retentive?)
- Revenue streams (what are customers willing to pay for? are you generating transactional or recurring revenues?)
- Key resources (what resources underpin your business model? which assets are essential?)
- Key activities (what activities do you need to perform well in your business model? what is crutial?)
- Key partners (which partners and suppliers leverage your model? who do you need to rely on?)
- Cost structure (what is the resulting cost structure? which key elements drive your costs?)
Use this as a tool to build a Business Model Canvas.
3.) Take time to think about alternative possibilities (Ask yourself difficult questions)
4.) Your business model idea is just a set of hypotheses (Therefore you should test it with your customers)
Customer Development
- Customer discovery
- Customer validation
- Customer creation
- Company building
Build special & agile Customer Development Team
A team that gets out of the building! To test and adapt the model.
Adapt the Business Model until you see that it works. This is called the Pivot. (You create first sales of minimal feature set).
5.) Don't build the company until you verified your Business Model.
After you verified your Business model, you can scale the marketing & build organization structure.
